Ever since Fisher Clark Deli — one of Denver’s best — closed in 2010, the space at 723 South University Boulevard, next door to Saucy Noodle, has struggled to keep tenants. When Fisher Clark shuttered, the joint that moved in — the loathsome Loaves N Ladles — lasted a mere five months; Apple Spice Junction, a national sandwich chain that eventually snapped up the square footage after a long run in Baker, shut its doors after just four.

Three consecutive delis, all of which closed within a year-and-a-half of one another, suggest that sandwiches are not what the Bonnie Brae and Washington Park neighborhoods are hungering for. But perhaps a chicken wing pit stop is, because a joint called Grillin’ Wings & Things, which will open early next month, has snapped up the coop.

But will it fly?

If its liquor-license application is approved (the hearing was on July 5, and its status is still pending), and if the wings and other grilled things aren’t cock-blocked by sandwiches, then perhaps the ‘hood will have a more permanent rooster.

What do chickens serve at birthday parties?
Coop-cakes.

What do you get when a chicken lays an egg on top of a barn?
An egg roll.

Happy Friday.
