From the guy who did Kiss covers at a Devo convention a few years ago comes this latest offering of absurdist humor blended with bare-bones synth-pop. Putatively filmed live and broadcast via satellite to other parts of the country from the Quad Cities, this “digital” VHS release looks and feels like a bad cable-access show from the ’80s. Before “Think’a,” Magic talks about how he and his other bandmates were thinking of firing the drummer — despite the fact that it’s obvious throughout he’s using loops and samples on his synthesizer to launch each song. If Edward Ka-Spell decided to become an Andy Kaufman-esque comedian, only one step more into the conceptually absurd, the result might resemble the inspired bizarreness presented here.
