Proto-pop punks Smoking Popes have always existed like two bands in one quartet’s shared body; compositionally, the group creates powerful and speedy melodies with classic punk instrumentation. But lead singer and guitarist Josh Caterer’s voice swings smoothly like a cross between Bobby Darin and Morrissey, and it’s this sonic divergence that made Smoking Popes an influence on a pre-Fall Out Boy radio world.
The band’s backstory is a long and mildly tumultuous one, beginning in 1991 and involving several drummer departures, a little Christianity, and now, a tour in support of a brand new album, This Is Only A Test. The Smoking Popes play the hi-dive tonight with Big Trouble and The Fire Drills. This show is eighteen and up, and tickets are $12. Doors open at 9 p.m., and the show starts at 10 p.m.
