Phil Bender might be the heart and soul of the Pirate gallery, one of Denver’s oldest art cooperatives and a standard-bearer of the communal spirit, but 32 — the number of years Pirate’s been operating — is just another year to him. And he says he’ll be there, even if it’s just him all by his lonesome, on January 1, Pirate’s true anniversary date. “I’ll drink champagne by myself if it comes to that,” he adds. But there might be champagne tonight, too, when the annual anniversary members show opens with a Night With a Pirate Party, featuring an art auction to benefit the little gallery that could.
“We’re trying to keep our membership dues at the same level they’ve been at for quite some time,” Bender continues. “We’re surviving, but it’s getting harder to do. The economy is catching up to us in that way.”
Attend the reception from 6 to 10 p.m. at Pirate, 3655 Navajo Street; the art for auction, all sized at 18 x 18 inches, will be displayed in a grid on the wall for bidding, though online bidding is already open at www.pirateonline.org (bids start at $50). For more information, call 303-456-6058.
