Flappers and fellas will be putting on the glitz tonight to celebrate the Roaring Twenties at the Thin Man’s Great Gatsby Ball. Every year, the bar converts itself into a whole new world for one night, pumping in live music, ambient lighting and vibrant decor to fit a chosen theme. “We’ve loosely based it on the party scene in the movie remake — but we don’t have quite the budget to do it like they do in Hollywood,” jokes Thin Man owner Eric Alstead.

Still, the bar will be transformed into a swanky lounge and its basement turned into a DJ-led dance party, while the adjoining St. Mark’s Coffeehouse will become a dance hall, with live music from local ska-influenced acts the Dendrites and the Alpha Schoolmarm Orchestra. Between sets, stride piano player David Keeling will invite party-goers to do the Charleston to live ragtime songs. Period attire is by no means required, but everyone is encouraged to at least don tuxedos and drop-waist dresses to fit the theme.

This once-a-year bash is a way for the bar to give back to its patrons with great music, great drinks, great food and one of the best New Year’s Eve parties in town, Alstead says. For a nominal fee, the Thin Man’s signature “pink bus” will also make the rounds for party-goers who need a ride home.

Tickets for the Great Gatsby Ball are $35 and can be purchased at the bar or at brownpapertickets.com. Since this 21-and-up New Year’s Eve party regularly sells out each year, get your tickets in advance, then head to the Thin Man and St. Mark’s, 2015 and 2019 East 17th Avenue, respectively, tonight at 8 p.m. For more information, call 303-320-7814.
