Andy Sydow

After listening to the first few songs of his self-titled debut, it’s clear that Andy Sydow is no one-trick pony; a multi-instrumentalist, he’s also well versed in a number of genres. Sydow kicks the album off with the Americana-steeped “Soul Searchin’,” which shares a passing resemblance to Billy Bragg & Wilco’s “Airline to Heaven.” Elsewhere, he displays an affinity for the Mississippi Delta with the swampy blues of “I Sold My Soul to Robert Johnson” and “Find Me Baby”; delves into jazz with the slinky “Trying to Let Go”; puts a New Orleans spin on “Whiskey Blues”; and seems to channel both Randy Newman and Dr. John on “You’re Gonna Want Me Back.” But even though Sydow mixes styles throughout the disc, he seems quite comfortable in all of them.
