Earlier this month, Safeway and King Soopers workers ratified a new contract — most of them, anyhow.
But a vote last night by Safeway meat workers in Salida finally put a period on nearly a year’s wroth of bickering and strike threats. Now, as noted on the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 7 website, all Safeway, King Soopers, City Market and Albertsons bargaining units in Colorado have approved the deal.
Which makes sense to UFCW 7 spokesman Dave Minshall.
“Workers recognized that this was an all-gains deal — bonus, raises, improvements in an already good health insurance deal,” Minshall says. “And it also stabilizes the pension and helps retirees.

“I think folks realized that decent jobs are hard to come by these days — especially decent jobs with benefits.”
The result? Workers don’t have to worry about a contract for several more years, and consumers don’t have to stress about picket lines. All-gains indeed.
