Wake-Up Call: Let’s give thanks for political turkeys

On Saturday, a group of Tea Party activists gathered at the Colorado State Capitol to celebrate Thanksgiving — and small government — by reading the Mayflower Compact.

For political theater that laid an egg, it didn’t come close to the turkey served by Roy Romer-era Lieutenant Governor Mike Callihan, who suggested that Native Americans (a group over which the lieutenant governor actually has some oversight) might enjoy Thanksgiving dinner in a Mayflower van parked in front of the Capitol.

After that political triumph, Callihan lost a congressional race to Scott McInnis, now running for governor of Colorado, and left public life for a turkey of an investment in Kenny Rogers Roasters.
