Architects and designers will get a chance to play with their food today as Canstruction Colorado 2012 gets under way at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science. To compete in this colossal building event, seven teams will use nearly 10,000 donated cans of food to create visual masterpieces such as buildings, bridges or cities. And tomorrow night, The CanDo Awards will be presented to designers in four categories: Best Meal, Best Use of Labels, Structural Ingenuity and Jurors’ Favorite, given by local celebrity judges.

All of the works will be on display until April 9, when they’ll be dismantled and the food given to Hunger Free Colorado, which helps tens of thousands of Coloradans in need every year. “Raising awareness around how many people have to put food on the table every day is our goal,” says Canstruction Colorado spokeswoman Kathie Kramer Ryan.

Visitors to the museum, at 2001 Colorado Boulevard, can watch the construction for free with their museum admission. For more information on Canstruction Colorado 2012, visit www.hungerfreecolorado.org/canstruction.html. To purchase tickets for tomorrow night’s CanDo Awards ceremony, call Ryan at 303-919-6199.
