Is it trash or treasure? At today’s fifth annual Antique Row Neighborhood Block Party, experts will be on hand to appraise all kinds of stuff, from artwork to Civil War-era belongings to dolls and more. “People think that because Grandma owned something that it’s 300 years old. Well, Grandma may have bought it at Target two years before she died, so we gently tell people that information,” says Rachel Hoffman, president of the Antique Row Merchant Association. Local legend Eron Johnson will join other dealers in offering free appraisals for a good cause: Participants are asked to bring a can of food in exchange, which will be donated to a local charity.
But since this is South Broadway, there will be plenty more: Dinosaur Ridge and its full-scale model dinosaur will share information on Colorado’s prehistoric past; Lush Life will host a pop-up market of local goods; an old-fashioned car show will get in gear; and, of course, antiques dealers from all along the strip will be out and about with their wares.
Antique Row has gotten a bad rap in the past because of some cranky merchants, but Hoffman says those folks are long gone, and this big shindig is designed to reintroduce Denver to all the good that happens on this part of South Broadway. The block party goes down from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today; appraisals will take place from noon to 4 p.m. in the parking lot of Turn of the Century Antiques, 1475 South Broadway.
