Want to do all your St. Paddy’s Day partying in one place? Then after Saturday’s parade, head to Katie Mullen’s, the massive new Irish bar at 1550 Court Place. Not only does Katie’s feature owners who run proper pubs back on the old sod, masterfully pulled Guinness on tap and fine Irish cuisine (potatoes are excellent for soaking up all that alcohol), but it’s really four bars in one: There’s a Victorian bar on one side, an old-fashioned apothecary bar around the corner, then a nice snug and a more modern Irish pub around the corner from that. Keep walking, and you have a pub crawl without leaving the building.
From March 13 through March 17, Katie’s will also host Pinch of Snuff, a serious Irish bar band, playing twice daily. But as owner Paul Maye explains it, “playing” is kind of loosely defined, since the lads have a tendency to play a song, head for the bar, have a pint, maybe hit on someone’s girlfriend, then wander back, tell a story, offer another tune or two, and so on. On Saturday and again on the 17th, the bar will also offer bagpipers, Irish dancers and, no doubt, gigantic crowds. So get there early to claim your space, then stay late to avoid the hordes of amateurs out on the streets, wandering around the lesser pubs, puking green beer into the gutters and picking fights with lampposts.
