“Sometimes it feels like you’re working in a vacuum; its nice to have a camaraderie with other artists to inspire you and make your work better,” says Sigri Strand, one of a handful of artists featured in Moonlight Drive: Domestic Astronauts. A photographer and member of Pirate Contemporary Art, Strand decided that this time around, she wanted to share the opportunity to have a show at Pirate.
Strand, Amelia Carley, Caitlin Hamilton, Lauren Hegge, Anna Millholland, Dominique Settles and Meghan Wilbar all work at the Denver Art Museum; about six months ago, the women began meeting regularly to discuss and critique each other’s work. The resulting bond became the catalyst for this show, which features a mix of photography, painting, sculpture and installation work. “By bringing our work together, hopefully we will inspire other artists to get together and critique each other and keep the work going,” says Strand.
The opening reception for Moonlight Drive takes place tonight from 6 to 10 p.m. at Pirate Contemporary Art, 3655 Navajo Street; the show runs through August 24. For more information, visit pirateartonline.com.
