A decade ago, when Oyster the Race began, the Denver urban-adventure course was extremely challenging athletically, inspiring participants to nickname it the “Rocky Mountain Ball Buster.” And while the race has since toned down the skill level, it’s still all about physical fun and camaraderie as teams of triathletes and newbies plow through the mystery course.
“One leg of the race might require solving a puzzle through clues placed throughout a downtown Denver landmark like Coors Field. Some challenges are athletic, some are just zany,” says spokeswoman Emily Salberg. The race is a fundraiser for Colorado’s Make-a-Wish Foundation, and participants preregister their Oyster teams; the more money they raise, the more clues they receive about how to navigate the ten-to-thirty-mile citywide obstacle course. They might have to bike, walk, run or climb parts of the route — or get wet — to reach the finish line, but they won’t know any details until the race begins. They do know, however, that a party and prizes for the biggest fundraisers await at the end of the course, which can take anywhere from two to six hours to complete.
Check-in for today’s Oyster the Race begins at 6:30 a.m. at the Downtown Aquarium, 700 Water Street; the first round of racing begins at 8. Entry fees are $39 to $120 per person, with a minimum of three people per team. For more information, visit oysterracingser-ies.com.
