The Winter X Games, which get started today at the base of Aspen’s Buttermilk Mountain, always go hard, with big air and high style. Thirteen of the Games’ eighteen seasons have taken place in Colorado, with the premier action-sports showcase attracting high-profile athletes and fans of all ages from around the globe. Snowboarders, freeskiers and snowmobilers will do what they do best, with the Games welcoming the return of two events, the Snowboarder X and Snowmobile Long Jump (originally called the Knockout), after a brief hiatus from the run of competitions.
This year, the Winter X Games will showcase the largest number of Olympic contenders in its history — just two weeks before com-petitions begin in Sochi. “The X Games is the ultimate stage in action sport, and is created to provide the athletes all the necessary tools to showcase their skills,” says spokesman Tim Reed. Along with expert athleticism, the four-day event will feature a diverse array of contemporary musical acts, with Tiësto, Axwell, Phoenix and Matt & Kim providing a weekend of slopeside entertainment.
