Is what we say through the voice of our social-networking persona more than just a simple status update? Decorated local poet, actor and teacher Wayne A. Gilbert thinks so, and it was the gathering of his own Internet postings that inspired tonight’s performance of Facebook Quickies: Poems From Facebook Posts Arranged in Several Voices at Edge Gallery.
Gilbert and his fellow actors from US-IN-A-BOX theater troupe will position themselves around the gallery and take turns reading his status updates, pieces he describes as “some poetry, some mini-rants,” and some of his day-to-day musings. “I think of Facebook as a kind of space, and texts are like artifacts that are constantly changing and moving around,” says Gilbert, adding that the positioning of actors around the room is also meant to convey the sense of space and distance between people when they interact online.
Each Friday through the end of October, Edge Gallery members Jennifer Hope, Gayla Lemke and Dania Pettus are making slight themed changes, additions and subtractions to their current exhibits within the space. This evening’s theme is “Word,” and Gilbert’s piece will act as a complementary auditory component.
Facebook Quickies will be performed tonight at 8 p.m. at Edge, 3658 Navajo Street. The program is free and part of Edge’s ongoing Watch This Space… exhibition series. For more information, visit edgeart.org.
