Danyl Cook was first inspired to paint trees on a trip to Italy, but it’s the trees in the parks of Denver that move him emotionally and creatively. “I can’t stop looking at them,” says Cook, who volunteers with the Parks and People Partnership, part of Denver’s Parks and Recreation department. “I have about twenty paintings of trees with thin, tall trunks and bushy tops.” Cook, who is known for his paintings of stylized houses in charcoal and pastel, has switched to paint on linen and Gessobord for his most recent works.
They’ll be on display today through March 22 at Zip 37 Gallery, 3644 Navajo Street, in a solo show called Trees: Blue, Brown, Red, Cream; tonight’s opening reception runs from 6 to 10 p.m. Cook plans to donate between 10 and 15 percent of sale proceeds to the parks department.
