The definition of “water sports” heard during the Olympics is very different from the one used by those with kinkier predilections. But participants in the latter know it’s good form to find a willing partner — and the woman on whom Timothy Paez allegedly urinated at a Boulder bar definitely…
Only weeks after the Aurora theater shooting, CU Denver philosophy professor Chad Kautzer has created a petition to stop concealed weapons from being allowed on state campuses. But the two ideas are not connected, he says: Kautzer has been contemplating the response since the Colorado Supreme Court ruled that the…
Rollin Oliver, the 21-year-old accused of murdering Denver Police Officer Celena Hollis at City Park in June, was back in court this morning, where his defense attorney requested that the preliminary hearing in the case be postponed. His attorney explained that there’s a lot of evidence in the case and…
Earlier this week, we posted about the arrest of Dennis O’Dell from the hammer murder of his uncle — a crime Colorado Springs Police believe was inspired and potentially fueled by meth. The account sparked this exchange about the difference between meth heads and zombies…
For years, medical marijuana opponents have argued that MMJ is being diverted for illicit recreational purposes, with industry advocates countering that there’s no proof of such claims. There is now, says Tom Gorman, director of the Rocky Mountain High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area. A new report entitled “Colorado’s ‘Medical’ Marijuana”…
After the Aurora theater shooting, the Century 16, where a twelve people died and dozens more were hurt during a midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises, closed, and there are very real doubts about whether it will ever re-open. Nonetheless, pages for the theater remain on all the major…
There have been plenty of theories about James Holmes’s actions in the Aurora theater shooting, including some that appear semi-plausible (e.g., reactions to antidepressants) and others that seem unmoored from reality (the assault was staged to promote a United Nations gun control measure). The possibility advanced by Father Dwight Longenecker?…
Yesterday, we noted that Dr. Lynne Fenton, the psychiatrist ID’d as treating accused Aurora theater shooter James Holmes, was the target of stories about previous disciplinary action more minor than headlines implied. Now, however, Fenton is getting press more positive for her but potentially injurious to the University of Colorado…
In the stillness of a summer afternoon, the hours baking away in the clay-oven heat of southwestern New Mexico, Justin Simoni began to wonder if he was done. Done, as in kaput. Finito. Beaten. Done. This was around mile 2,600 of what was alleged to be a 2,745-mile bicycle race…
“Dark Night,” Latest Word, July 26 Taking Aim I am for common-sense gun rights, but I do not agree with the NRA’s extremely lenient view of guns and gun ownership. Shouldn’t someone have noticed the mass purchase of firearms by James Eagen Holmes? Doesn’t someone or an agency monitor not only…
Since it was created nine years ago, the city’s One Book, One Denver program has had a few problems living up to the second part of its name. It has chosen trendy best sellers like The Art of Racing in the Rain and The Help; classics with no connection to…
Sad sacks: The national sports media descended on Denver last weekend for the opening of Broncos training camp, and they mostly spend their time fawning over Peyton Manning — a little different feeling than last year’s Tim Tebow mania — which was expected. Even better? no one on the team…
Last week, we wrote about Lakewood’s Masterpiece Cakeshop, which, like larger national chains including Chik-Fil-A, has taken a stance on gay marriage. Owner Jack Phillips does not create cakes for gay ceremonies. And while members of the local community are planning protests against a policy they find discriminatory, supporters have…
The heated gun control debates that have emerged in response to the Aurora theater shooting that left twelve dead have reached elected officials at all different levels of government — whether they want to talk about it or not. Since Denver Mayor Michael Hancock, arguably the most prominent Colorado member…
Denver blog posts are large and in charge. Big Media’s Jason Salzman learns that while KHOW’s Michael Brown enthusiastically supports Mitt Romney for president, partner David Sirota is much more lukewarm about Barack Obama. Bronco Talk’s Monty on why the Broncos have decided to close this afternoon’s practice to the…
All day on Saturday, July 21 — the day after authorities say 24-year-old James Holmes killed twelve people and injured 58 others at a midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises in Aurora — Sergeant Cassidee Carlson couldn’t stop thinking about something the governor’s communications director had said to her…
The description of the crime scene and the suspect in the death of ninety-year-old Kenneth “Bud” Elmgreen are, to put it mildly, strange. But Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office representatives believe the case adds up to murder — and the person they’ve arrested is Elmgreen’s 53-year-old son and namesake…
On Friday, we shared with you recently filed court documents in the Aurora theater shooting. Among their revelations: Accused killer James Holmes was under psychiatric care prior to the assault. Now, however, that same document, which remains uncensored in our post, and in this one, has been altered on the…
Yesterday’s post about an Idaho billboard that equates Barack Obama with James Holmes, the accused Aurora theater shooter, inspired one reader to dissect the comparison — and to suggest that gun laws allowing people like Holmes to assemble incredible arsenals are our collective responsibility. Here’s what he has to say…
Several years ago, Westword created the Mile High Murder archive to track area homicides. Since we began covering the July 20 attack on the Century 16, however, we haven’t included our reporting in that category, instead grouping it under several other headings, including our Aurora Theater Shooting archive. Our approach…
Update: Shortly after publishing the following item about Dr. Lynne Fenton, a CU psychiatrist who treated accused Aurora theater shooter James Holmes, we heard from Steffan Andrews, Fenton’s ex-husband, and one of the people to whom she provided Claritin and other meds without keeping proper records, earning censure from a…
Centennial’s Missy Franklin is among the breakout stars of the London Olympics — and not just because of her edge-of-seventeen excitement over Justin Bieber’s tweet after she won a gold medal. Thus far, she’s displayed a tremendous ability to balance youthful exuberance and beyond-her-years maturity — qualities never so evident…
