Adam Norrell likes the words “snazzy” and “sparky.” He says them more than you’d expect from a 34-year-old software nerd from Castle Rock, especially when he’s describing his new online dating site, the snazzily named Vlirty. Norrell came up with the idea for Vlirty, which allows users to video chat,…
This week’s cover story subject, Occupy Denver protester and medical marijuana voice Corey Donahue, has cornered his role in Denver activism through strategies that are occasionally illegal and never boring. Say what you like about him, (Occupy Denver’s Twitter account called him out this morning), but the man stays busy…
The release of an EPA report detailing suspected groundwater contamination from gas drilling operations in Wyoming comes just as Colorado is weighing tougher restrictions and wider disclosures about the hydraulic fracturing or “fracking” process — and may serve as Exhibit A for environmental groups opposing the practice. All of which…
Laura Lichter, president-elect of the American Immigration Lawyers Association, describes prosecutorial discretion in the context of a police officer witnessing a bank robbery and jay-walking at the same time and knowing to stop the bank robber first. This is essentially the principal that is being put to work in the…
The Denver Zoo’s two lady elephants, Mimi and Dolly, moved yesterday to their new home: the recently rechristened Toyota Elephant Passage exhibit. Formerly called Asian Tropics, the ten-acre, $50 million elephant exhibit was renamed thanks to a $5.4 million donation from the Denver Toyota Dealers Association. In the spirit of…
Denver blog posts are untangling the web. Colorado Independent’s John Tomasic: Perry Haney becomes the second Democrat to challenge Mike Coffman in the 6th, joining Joe Miklosi. Oh, what a few redrawn lines hath wrought. Geeks Who Drink ask: How is “pole position” not a gay porn film? Denver Egotist…
It can’t have been easy to be married to Charlie Sheen: Tiger Blood just isn’t the basis for a happy union. But that doesn’t excuse Brooke Mueller for her #winning cocaine arrest last weekend near the Belly Up in Aspen — the scene of another Shmucky episode just two week…
Colorado Avalanche center Matt Duchene has already been picked by Westword as Denver’s Best Av and Best Local Athlete on Twitter, so, you know we love him. But now you can join in the love with an autographed jersey. What a stellar holiday gift, right? In order to win, tell…
Last month, we told you about the arrest of Anthony Harvey, home-decor expert and alleged drug-ring leader, as part of a law-enforcement operation dubbed Project White Out. Now, another of the accused participants in the scheme, Jimmie Joe Montgomery, has been taken into custody as well — but only after…
Update: Westword recently received a copy of Kilmer, Lane & Newman’s updated CORA request from investigator Christopher Dodd. The document is blunt: In it, Dodd references the existence of an Occupy movement-related U.S. Conference of Mayors conference call involving Mayor Michael Hancock’s staff and asks very specifically for any details…
This week, Congressman Jared Polis quizzed U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder about the Department of Justice’s approach to medical marijuana; see a video of the exchange below. For the most part, Holder suggested that MMJ businesses following state law are not Department of Justice priorities, despite recent crackdowns in California…
Patricia Calhoun’s post about the ultimately unsuccessful Occupy Denver request for a temporary restraining order against Denver noted that police destroyed occupiers’ tents yet allowed bargain hunters to camp out for a week-plus prior to Sports Authority’s SNIAGRAB sale. One commenter had something to say about that…

This week’s federal court hearing between Occupy Denver and the city ended in a denied injunction but much food for thought. Lead plaintiffs attorney David Lane called the decision a civil rights tragedy and said Judge Robert Blackburn “ignored most of the evidence we put in front of him.” In…
Zachary Meints, a volunteer coach for the youth-oriented Boulder Hockey Club, was arrested yesterday on five Internet sexual exploitation of a child counts — a disturbing development by any measure. But equally troubling for parents of team members is evidence that club officials knew about the allegations for two months…
Politicians featured in comedy bits on The Daily Show don’t usually draw attention to their appearances, given that they tend to come across as clueless bozos. But Senator Mark Udall’s office actually wants constituents to watch the following video, about a provision of a defense bill that would allow indefinite…
It’s yet another indication of how the Tim Tebow phenomenon has split so-called NFL experts. Earlier this week, we noted that ESPN’s Total QBR ranking system lists Tebow as the fifth worst quarterback in the NFL despite a 6-1 record this season that found him besting signal-callers all slotted above…
AllGreens is a new shop, but it’s situated in one of Denver’s oldest locations for medical marijuana dispensary — which could be both a good thing and a bad thing. One one hand, the spot on the corner of Kalamath and Sixth Avenue is highly visible. On the other, it’s…
After your Colorado Rockies traded closer Huston Street to the San Diego Padres yesterday for a player to be named later, General Manager Dan O’Dowd made sure to tell MLB.com that the organization didn’t just dump money in the deal, but created opportunities for players inside the organization. That is…
Denver blog posts only want what’s best for you. Denver Stiffs’ Nate Timmons is hearing Nenê may actually return to Denver, while Wilson Chandler looks to be headed back to New York. At Elephant Journal, Meredith Potter digs into the meaty proposition of dating a vegan. Things to Do in…
This week’s feature story, “Tilting at Windmills,” profiles Corey Donahue, a modern-day Don Quixote, who keeps the cops and the courts in Denver very occupied. We featured Donahue on the cover, and in the following making-of video, art director Jay Vollmar reveals how the shot was created. Enjoy…

Thus ended a fourteen-month legal odyssey that began with a SWAT team bust and ended with a jury acquitting…
