Unlike so many patients stuck in medical marijuana limbo, I received my red card in the mail this week — 29 days from the date I sent my information and a check for $90 to the Colorado Department of Health and Environment. It was postmarked a week after it was…
Yesterday, Patti Dennis, news director at 9News, sent an e-mail to staff informing them that correspondent Deborah Sherman, who’d been at the station for nearly a decade, was no longer an employee — and assistant news director Tim Ryan declines to add details. This dearth of info is leading to…
For reasons we don’t understand but appreciate, a 2009 post by former staffer Joe Tone entitled “Denver: The manliest, drunkest, business-iest, happiest, safe-sex-having-ist city in America” went viral yesterday. Which means, predictably, that a number of Denver haters stepped up to share some less positive views about Our Fair City…
Back in March, Metro State’s Board of Trustees announced their plan to change the school’s name to Denver State University — a lackluster choice that also managed to piss off the folks at the University of Denver. So Metro is now asking students to choose among three new possibilities –…
The accusation that teacher Terah Rawlings had an ongoing sexual relationship with a fifteen-year-old student is bad enough. But other circumstances push the alleged crime into even creepier territory. For one thing, Rawlings was employed at a religious school. For another, administrators are said to have known about the issue…
It’s gotten to the point where it’s funny, at least for Broncos fans. Denver’s 17-13 win over the Jets will no doubt boost sales of those Tim Tebow Jesus jerseys, as well as more comparisons between The Chosen One and His Lord and Savior, and that’s understandable. After all, JC’s…
Call it a byproduct from years of being made to feel like a felon, but I’m not the biggest fan of police. I’ve met a few cool cops. Still, most of them view my life as a crime in progress — which is why I’ve subconsciously been avoiding shops near…
There is only one thing better than a drunken tweet, and that is a drunken tweet by someone who can actually say something clever in 140 characters. We are, of course, talking about last night’s Denver #WebAwards at Casselman’s. Between the booze and snacks from Dave and Buster’s and the…
Today’s initial celebration of Occupy Wall Street’s two-month anniversary ended with the largest display of honks from passing cars the local movement has heard in a while (at least without a ticket). The day has been designated a national cause for action for occupations across the world, and Occupy Denver…
A study by researchers at the National Institute of Corrections has found that Colorado’s approach to locking down its most unruly prisoners in 23-hour-a-day isolation is “basically sound” — but could be used a lot less. Instead, even as the state’s prison population is declining slightly, the use of “administrative…
In the six months since it opened, the Office of Colorado’s Child Protection Ombudsman has investigated fifty calls ranging from complaints that entire counties are corrupt to more specific cries for help, says ombudsman Becky Miller Updike. Still, she’d like to hear from even more people who have concerns, suggestions…
Denver blog posts make great holiday gifts. Predominantly Orange’s Kim Constantinesco writes that the Jets fear the Broncos’ one-dimensional offense. Is there power in dullness? Colorado Independent’s Scot Kersgaard notes that Jared Polis leads the state’s delegation in net worth. Why does Square State’s Fong advise folks to cease and…
Jefferson County Child Support Services has developed a new video intended to show that the department offers support for teen parents and children. However, most of the 21-minute long production called Think Beyond Friday Night is spent detailing all the horrors and tribulations of teen pregnancy…
Yesterday, 9News broke the story of Colorado School of Mines student Tim Wilson. The 25-year-old is facing up to ten years in prison in Japan because a friend back here in Colorado sent him a care package containing some pot cookies and Cheeba Chews…
Last night, the 2011 Denver #WebAwards bash at Casselman’s proved that people who excel at social media are also might good at socializing in person. Photographer Chip Kalback captured the scene in all its high-tech/low-tech glory. Look below and page down to check out a sampling of his shots. Full…
Denver Film Society executive director Tom Botelho is still recovering from the just-concluded Starz Denver Film Festival; he’s got a severe cold. But the word of mouth about the fest makes him feel better, and so do attendance and revenue figures, both of which appear to be up over last…
November 17’s a day of action for Occupy Denver, which is marking the two-month anniversary of Occupy Wall Street. That could mean more arrests, and more suggestions by critics that the protests are dominated by longtime criminals. But a report about the arrest records of OD types busted this past…
Yesterday, Kelsey Whipple shared the bizarre story of a man ticketed by a Denver Police officer for honking two or three times in support of Occupy Denver protesters. If an edict against celebratory horn-tapping is strictly enforced, one reader envisions at least one rich source of potential ticket recipients…
Beth Allison never thought she’d have so much trouble donating food. After all, the economic downturn means there’s plenty of need, and the items she had to give were staples — mainly rice and beans — that can be easily stored. Moreover, she had a lot of it: approximately 1,200…
Here are the winners of the 2011 Denver #WebAwards in the category we’re loosely dubbing “news,” which means Westword scribes report on the happenings in these beats, right here on Latest Word. These are the winners only; for a complete list of finalists go here: “Here are your 2011 Denver…
There’s a reason raccoons wear masks. They’re natural bandits. But there’s a better way of dealing with such a rapscallion than beating him to death with a bat and then skewering him with a machete — which is precisely what three students, including Nicholas Foti (whose Facebook page features some…
Courtesy of Tim TiptonFor two days, the additional presence of police officers and Parks and Recreation maintenance workers has occasionally dwarfed the numbers of actual occupiers at Civic Center Park. Since Saturday’s riot, officers have increased their numbers at the occupation in efforts to monitor the group, but Public Works…
