Yesterday, after being officially inaugurated as Denver’s mayor, Michael Hancock invited locals to come to a Denver Botanic Gardens concert and get-together to celebrate. And thousands accepted. Photographer Stephen Cummings was on hand to capture the lively scene. Page through below to see shots of your friends and neighbors, plus…
Update:This past weekend, Estate Auctions spent two days selling off furniture and belongings left behind by Carmelo Anthony, who lost about $6 million on the sale of his Denver-area house after moving from the Nuggets to the New York Knicks. But if you didn’t get a chance to bid, you…
The appointment of Denver Archbishop Charles Chaput to succeed embattled Cardinal Justin Rigali as the Archbishop of Philadelphia is receiving mostly positive reviews in his new home city, at least thus far. That may say more about antipathy for Rigali, who critics accuse of failing to deal forthrightly with an…
Operation Fortune Cookie, a 2008 raid netting 24,000 marijuana plants, was the largest weed bust in state history — but it imploded among claims of police snitches, paid-off politicians and a secret DEA investigation. Last March, two Fortune Cookie investigators, Daniel Joyce and Robert Lopez, filed a lawsuit alleging they…
Robert Walters has been quiet, at least publicly, since he was arrested last year for murdering his girlfriend and then hiring someone to kill his wife, to whom prosecutors say he confessed the crime. But the opposite was true before he was arrested. As explained in this week’s cover story,…
What happens in a public trial becomes public record. Except when the government says it doesn’t. That little hitch in the law fuels the ongoing battle between Prison Legal News and the U.S. Justice Department over a graphic video shot inside the U.S. Penitentiary Florence in the aftermath of a…
We had these Denver blog posts line up single file. Mile High Report’s Tim Lynch links to a CBSSports.com item suggesting that Kyle Orton is likely to be traded — and if he is, Tim Tebow’s training camp would have to be miserable for Brady Quinn to beat him out…
Now that Michael Hancock is officially Denver’s mayor, does he already have a mole… who tweets? That’s the political guessing game surrounding 5280 Shadow, a mysterious Twitter feed that purports to offer inside scoop, most of it Hancock-related. Check out some examples…
Michael Hancock is now officially Denver’s mayor — and predictably, the speech he delivered to mark the occasion today was heavier on celebration than specifics. But other than hat tips to mayors from Speer to Hickenlooper and a quote from Plato (“This City is what it is because our citizens…
To know 16th Street Mall Swiss chard is to love its tender and delicious, if somewhat meaty, flavor. Originating in large, mallside Downtown Denver planters, this big-city bright lights strain of chard is a celebration of all that is colorful in the capital city of Colorado…..
The Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol Act of 2012 continues to be a target more than a year before the November 2012 election for which it’s aiming. First, rival organization Legalize2012 objected to any association with the terms “legalization” and “similar to alcohol.” Now, proponent Brian Vicente says gadfly Douglas Bruce…
Our post of a video purporting to show UFOs over Denver — from a YouTube user who claims to see unidentified objects in the sky here on a regular basis — brought a stern response to anyone who dismisses the possibility of Visitors From Beyond as crazy talk…
Friday’s Global Dance Festival attracted a crowd that dressed down — or hardly dressed at all, as photographer Aaron Thackeray discovered. But plenty of other intriguing things happened in front of our shutterbugs’ lenses this weekend. Check out So What at Beauty Bar, Moonlight Classic 2011 and more on our…
Walking alone in any city — even one as seemingly safe as Boulder — during the early morning hours can lead to bad things. The latest evidence: a sexual assault on an eighteen-year-old woman making a fast-food run early Saturday morning. Page down to see a sketch of the suspect…
A lot of people get cranky at the notion of being groped by TSA agents before being allowed to board flights. But Yukari Miyamae is accused of fighting back in a weirdly hands-on way. The Longmont resident has been accused of sexual abuse for allegedly grabbing and twisting a TSA…
Earlier this week, Cannabis University owner Michelle LaMay filed language with the state title review board that would eliminate all punishment for cannabis possession in Colorado. The introduction of her bill marks the second ballot initiative aimed at lessening marijuana punishments in the state behind the Regulate Marijuana like Alcohol…
As described in the cover story “The Nutty Professor,” Boulder professor Peter McGraw, with the help of his Humor Research Lab (HuRL), has come up with a universal theory of comedy they call the Benign Violation Theory (BVT). Last week, McGraw and theory co-creator Caleb Warren showed off the BVT…
Robert Walters, the subject of this week’s cover story, “Dead End,” was persistent, prosecutors say. After one man declined Walters’s request to kill his wife, he turned to Rodrick Williams, a career criminal who accepted the job but then ratted Walters out to the police. So who was the first…
The weekend beckons — as do these winsome Denver blog posts. Mile High Report’s John Bena shares footage of Tim Tebow teeing off and lining up a putt at the American Century Championship golf tournament. Is that supposed to make us football fans feel better? Coyote Gulch round up the…
Update: The poll has closed — results after the jump! Now that Major League Baseball is back to its regular season, the crescendo of complaints about the Rockies — and those fans’ predictions for the team — begins in earnest. But enough about what we think. Open thread Friday begins…
The best way to stay out of prison is not to commit crimes. It’s a simple concept, but one that may have eluded Landon Christopher Jensen, a 23-year-old Boulder man who managed to briefly escape from a police car Wednesday, according to the Boulder Daily Camera. Jensen, who apparently has…
If medical marijuana reviewer William Breathes looks tired lately, it’s not because he’s been critiquing too much weed. Since being featured on Rupert Murdoch’s iPad-friendly The Daily and National Public Radio, he’s been absolutely inundated with interview requests, many from international outlets. Which is a good thing, since a U.S…
