Kyle Orton continues to be a hot topic in this very strange NFL offseason — and getting hotter. With reported interest from the Miami Dolphins and the Minnesota Vikings, sources suggest that the Broncos now want more value for KO before shipping him to another franchise…
Update: Last week, Colorado Coalition for Patients and Caregivers’ Robert Chase sent an open letter to mayoral candidates Chris Romer and Michael Hancock, asking them to answer three key questions about marijuana policy in the city; see it below. At this writing, neither camp has responded to the request. So…

Is Ed Schultz coming unraveled? A week after telling fellow AM 760 air personality David Sirota to “go to hell” during a splenetic on-air spat, the syndicated yakker has been suspended from his MSNBC program for calling conservative mouthpiece Laura Ingraham a “right-wing slut” and a “talk slut” — bon…
As detailed in last week’s feature on Independent Monitor Richard Rosenthal, Denver is in the midst of a police-misconduct story that won’t go away. Now, as part of its “Race to Justice” police brutality awareness campaign, the ACLU tracked down all city payouts for police-related lawsuits and complaints between 2002…

Greeley author Connie Willis was in Washington over the weekend, picking up her seventh Nebula award from the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America. Yes, her seventh. The SFFWA’s 1,500 members awarded best novel honors to her epic two-volume work, Blackout/All Clear, a tale of time-traveling historians trying to…
North High School has long suffered from abysmal graduation rates — so, in 2008, Denver Public Schools added credit recovery, which allows students to retake courses online. Since then, grad rates have skyrocketed. But some North teachers wonder whether the gains are legit, and whether credit recovery is doing more…

Denver PD Sergeant Phillip Newton is in trouble, but not for police brutality. Instead, he was busted by his fellow boys in blue for driving under the influence following a Monday car crash. For Newton, this incident likely feels like déjà vu all over again. He was reportedly arrested on…
Last October, attorney Rob Corry wrote to John Hickenlooper to ask the then-Denver mayor to stop prosecuting Lacy Lee, a woman busted for smoking pot at a pro-cannabis rally; the case was later dropped. Now, Corry’s written to Hick again, this time to offer expert analysis on HB 1043, a…
At the very least, the recent ragtag assembly of Colorado tourist-attraction mascots at the Discover Colorado Rally proved that the snuggly symbols of the state’s travel industry are out of touch with reality. To appeal to today’s cash-strapped consumer, Colorado needs truthier travel mascots…..
This week, the FBI issued preliminary 2009-2010 crime stat comparisons for municipalities across the country, including five in Colorado: Boulder, Denver, Lakewood, Pueblo and Thornton. However, Aurora didn’t want to be left out. The city has released the data it shared with the feds, showing that major crimes declined in…
Patricia Calhoun’s post about the ACLU’s “Police Brutality is Killing Us” campaign — a movement inspired by beating cases like the one involving Alex Landau — sparked a number of strong comments. Take this one, in which a reader encourages witnesses to law-enforcement violence to pull out their cell phones…
Last week, a group led by Mason Tvert and Brian Vicente filed eight initiatives to legalize marijuana in 2012 in what Cannabis Therapy Institute’s Laura Kriho saw as a unilateral move that short-circuited input from grassroots locals. Rather than further fueling this spat, Vicente has extended an olive branch…
In December, state senator Suzanne Williams got into a crash in Texas that killed Brianna Gomez, who was seven months pregnant; the baby survived. Her attorney, David Lane, argued that the accident, while tragic, shouldn’t result in an indictment against Williams, and this month, a grand jury agreed. In the…

Earlier this year, Righthaven LLC, acting on behalf of MediaNews Group and the Denver Post, sued Brian Hill, a chronically ill, mildly autistic blogger, for copyright infringement over unauthorized use of a single photograph. After a barrage of bad publicity, Righthaven withdrew the suit, but not before making a settlement…

But unlike Barack Obama’s, this certificate had…
In 2008, North High School had the lowest graduation rate among Denver’s eleven traditional public high schools. Just 46 percent of its seniors managed to graduate that year. And the problem was nothing new. North has been the target of reform efforts for years, prompted by low test scores, a…

This would only require that a minority of investigative positions within the Denver Police Department’s Internal Affairs Bureau be transferred to…
In a striking example of medical marijuana’s growing legitimacy, the Denver-based Namaste Hospice will begin offering free medical marijuana to patients with terminal illnesses. While end-of-life care might not seem like the most cutting-edge of industries, Namaste, which has been providing Denver-area hospice services since 1998, seems to be downright…
