Update: At a news conference moments ago, a Denver Police Department spokesman identified the woman arrested in a fatal hit-and-run that took place yesterday afternoon in the vicinity of 13th and Kalamath as Latoya Nelson, thirty. The victim in the case has also been ID’d. He was Charlie Herrera, 85,…
Prince Harry may not have the fashion sense of Kate Middleton — especially when he’s gallivanting naked in Las Vegas — but he certainly seems like the most entertaining member of the British royal family. And, according to the Associated Press, he’ll be stopping in Denver and Colorado Springs during…
Yesterday, a newly released document revealed that James Holmes is willing to plead guilty to killing twelve people and injuring seventy others in the Aurora theater shooting if prosecutors agree not to pursue the death penalty. What’s the reaction of online Holmes fans? Well, there appear to be a lot…
Dear Stoner: I went to my friend’s house who is growing now and asked to see his plants. He said they were “sleeping,” and I wasn’t allowed in the room. Has he just smoked so much that he thinks his plants sleep? Non Toker Dear NT: Marijuana relies on the…
Police in riot gear guard the dugouts, preparing for the worst, with German shepherds at heel. This is Philadelphia in 1980, after all. It’s the bottom of the ninth. Two strikes. Two out. Bases loaded. Human rocket Willie Wilson of the Kansas City Royals hugs the plate, curiously dressed in…
Our first Best of Denver hit the streets in 1984, almost seven years after this paper published its first edition in 1977. It was the biggest issue of Westword up to that point — and about the size of an average weekly edition today. We were still a decade away…
Dear Dan: My brother is 22 years old and mentally ill, with social anxiety on the scale of agoraphobia (officially diagnosed). He’s made significant progress in the past few years, but he’s stuck on the fact that he’s a virgin and is convinced that he’s not going to make any…
The active patient numbers for Colorado’s medical marijuana community crept slightly higher in January, to 108,656 people, but any significant growth was offset by a pattern of people dropping off the registry each month. Although 2,911 new-patient applications were turned in between December 2012 and this past January, the number…
Last week, we told you the latest in the case of Bill Lee, an Idaho Springs rancher and mall Santa whose animals were seized in a cruelty investigation. Lee has agreed to plead guilty to one count of animal cruelty and has been granted a two-year deferred judgment — meaning…
Alan Prendergast recently wrote about civil-rights lawsuits against minor offenders whose lives have been turned upside-down by Colorado’s sex-offender laws. The issue is a tricky one, but one reader was able to spell out her views on the subject in a detailed and thoughtful way…
Denver blog posts are hoping for the best. At Colorado Pols, Jason Salzman quotes Tom Tancredo as saying he wants Mike Coffman to be reelected but doesn’t think his new, more moderate immigration stance will help him. Denver Egotist promotes the Knotty Tie Co. on Kickstarter. At WhoSaidYouSaid, Tom Intorcio…
David and Goliath is a tale of the underdog, of surmounting impossible odds and coming out the victor. But when Chris Cooper took on the pharmaceutical giant Pfizer, the sweetness of an unlikely victory came with a bitter aftertaste. As we reported in August 2011, Cooper’s beloved dog, Sophie, died…
Earlier today, a deputy-involved shooting near Colfax and Interstate 25 closed part of the highway for hours; a suspect in the case is still being sought at this writing. But Denver police officers know who caused a traffic nightmare on I-25 Monday — a truck driver who strafed an overpass…
In recent days, members of Colorado’s general assembly have been battling over legislation intended to outlaw the death penalty in Colorado. Yesterday, however, the proposal failed in the House Judiciary Committee. This development distressed the Colorado ACLU; see the group’s statement below. But it was good, or at least positive,…
The Amendment 64 task force recommended allowing out of staters to buy cannabis in Colorado — and if the legislature agrees, the decision would open the door to pot tourism. But the folks behind a company called My 420 Tours aren’t waiting for lawmakers to sign off. They’re actively promoting…
Today, the Supreme Court will consider arguments for and against the Defense of Marriage Act — a hearing that recalls the court’s part in tossing out 1992’s Amendment 2, which prevented bodies in Colorado from recognizing gays and lesbians as a protected class. The passage of Amendment 2 led to…
On Monday, a suicidal man’s last desperate act shut down C-470 at Interstate 25 at one of the trickiest possible times: morning rush. Today, something similar is going on at the southbound off-ramp of Colfax at I-25. This time, however, the cause of the closure is a deputy-involved shooting. Details…
The Medical Marijuana Enforcement Division, which is charged with overseeing dispensaries and other MMJ-related enterprises, has been among the state’s most beleaguered institutions for years. Note the big staff cuts last April and the September announcement that no appointments would be available until February. Even so, the damning nature of…
Attorneys for Fox News reporter Jana Winter, who reported that Aurora theater shooting suspect James Holmes sent a notebook “full of details about how he was going to kill people” to a psychiatrist, are fighting to postpone a hearing at which she has been subpoenaed to testify about where she…
Yesterday, Patricia Calhoun wrote about the testy exchange between John Hickenlooper and a 9News reporter over an insinuation of special privileges for Evan Ebel, the son of a longtime Hick friend, and the man thought to have murdered his prison-chief appointee, Tom Clements. One reader thought Hick’s response was wholly…
