Last week, we introduced you to Frank McDonald, self-proclaimed mayor of Stoner, Colorado, who announced plans to transform the two-person town where he lives into an entertainment destination infused with the spirit of Amendment 64. Since that story and another profile, however, McDonald says he’s been jailed and harassed –…
Inside a single-story house on a quiet street an hour north of Tampa, nine-year-old Falcon Heene plugs in his bass guitar and fires up his amp. The scrawny, barefoot kid, four and a half feet tall, launches into “Burnin’ to Play,” off his band’s first, home-recorded album, Heene Boyz Rock…
“Altered State,” Off Limits, November 29 Sweet Dreams On a recent trip to Las Vegas, we were excited to go to Fremont Street to try a local delicacy: the deep-fried Twinkie! To our disappointment, there were no Twinkies to be had. Due to the recent contract negotiations between the Hostess…
Scene and herd: “I like to think I’m a downhome Denverite who only wants to treat people with dignity and respect each and every moment of every day,” pronounces Anthony Aragon on his Facebook page. Aragon has a head for politics and a heart in public service; he worked for…
Richard and Mayumi Heene were prohibited by a judge from making money off the Balloon Boy story until 2013, but they’ve still floated a few trial balloons. In late spring 2011, they put the balloon at the center of the hoax up for auction online — for $1 million. At…
For the third year in a row, state lawmakers will be pushing for an official marijuana DUI limit, to curb what they say is an epidemic of stoned drivers that will only get worse with the passage of Amendment 64. Senator Steve King, a Western Slope Republican, is again sponsoring…
In our recent cover story, “Bed Check,” which chronicles the challenges homeless women in Denver face, we note the need for both emergency shelter and more permanent homes. In the latter category, a group called the Empowerment Program is now pushing forward with a housing project specifically for female veterans…
In this year’s campaign, Senator Jean White and state House candidate Jeffrey Hare, both Republicans, were attacked via mailers featuring a gay couple kissing and slogans suggesting that the image represented their version of family values. Turns out that the couple in question, Brian Edwards and Tom Privitere, weren’t asked…
Denver blog posts multiply like rabbits…with calculators. Bronco Talk’s Jon Heath thinks the Broncos are toast if they meet the Patriots in the playoffs at Foxboro — but he believes a Mile High match-up would be a different story. Denver Infill’s Ryan Dravitz offers an AMLI Riverfront update. Denver PR…
In this space yesterday, marijuana advocate Christian Sederberg spoke positively about the Amendment 64 task force to which he was just named. So, too, does attorney Sean McAllister, who lobbied the governor’s office about the importance of marijuana consumers being represented on the panel. But with his optimism comes caution…
People across the country may have their eyes on the Mile High City because legalized marijuana is officially a thing. But Denver’s also going to get some national attention for another celebrated activity: its night-time bike parties. The Denver Cruisers are hosting an off-season ride tonight that will be featured…
Well, we’ve had a couple of days to absorb the naming of Mike MacIntyre, formerly with San Jose State, as the CU Buffs’ head football coach. But frankly, we still have no idea whether the move has a reasonable chance of success — and neither does anyone else. After all,…
Our post about Governor John Hickenlooper’s signing of Amendment 64 turned out to be a fount of conversation. But while Hick’s proclamation allowed possession of an ounce or less of marijuana for adults 21 and over, a sales mechanism is not yet in place — a contradiction noted by one…
Update: Yesterday afternoon, after we shared an activist Max Montrose’s claim that a Fox31 report on driving under the influence of THC was rigged (see our previous coverage below), the station released a 1,600-word response denying the claim. Reporter Mark Meredith insists the driving simulator wasn’t rigged, and says the…
‘Tis the season for Scrooge stories — and a report out of Grand Junction was made to order. A GJ mom says she and her three kids are being evicted from their apartment after her thirteen-year-old son shoplifted a pair of shoes from Kmart — because, he says, his feet…
Now that Amendment 64 is law, the mainstream media is beginning to grapple with the contradictions between the act’s language and federal law. The latest solution, as floated by the Washington Post and Rachel Maddow fill-in Ezra Klein? Reschedule marijuana so that it is no longer listed as a Schedule…
Back in May 2011, we told about accused procurer Germaine “Jell-O” Wallace, who was arrested along with four women who allegedly helped him run a prostitution ring through high-profile Denver strip clubs. He’s now been convicted on a pair of charges that netted him a fifteen-year sentence in the Big…
This is one way to get politicians’ attention. Yesterday, around 150 activists descended on the offices of Senators Michael Bennet and Mark Udall to urge them to avoid “fiscal cliff” negotiations that protect the wealthy and burden the middle class. Protesters did so in 24 different shifts every twenty minutes,…
Right around the time we reported yesterday about a recount request in Boulder, Ellyn Hilliard, the Republican House candidate who’d asked for one, decided she would not be going forward after all — in part, because it would just be too expensive. The costs, she argues, are an explicit tactic…
Denver blog posts are back — and front. South Stands Denver’s Colin D. points out that big man JaVale McGee gets more national attention than most of his Nuggets teammates — mainly because he’s a human blooper reel. But he’s our human blooper reel. Plants & Animals Denver’s Mark H…
Word that Governor John Hickenlooper had signed Amendment 64 into law necessarily overshadowed the announcement of members assigned to a task force that will guide implementation of the act. But Christian Sederberg, who’ll represent the A64 campaign in the group, thinks the process is off to a positive start…
It just doesn’t make sense for lawmakers to allow guns on college campuses, where the risks of suicide or shootings tied to mental health illness can be high. At least that’s an argument of Boulder Representative Claire Levy, who is crafting legislation that would add campus buildings to the list…
