The February murders of Amara Wells and Bob Rafferty were followed by a series of busts, with arrestees including Amara’s estranged husband, Christopher Wells, and three men implicated in a murder-for-hire plot. But only now are getting the horrific details of the case, including an account about Rafferty’s six-year-old niece,…
It’s been a big contest year for Westword, culminating in three awards for Joel Warner at the National Association of Black Journalists convention earlier this month. Warner took the prize for investigative reporting with “Taken for a Ride,” his December 2, 2010, exposé on the shady doings of some of…
On Friday, dog lovers who oppose breed specific legislation like Denver’s pit bull ban gathered on the 16th Street Mall to stage what they describe as a flash mob — although it was closer to a political demonstration. After a megaphone-amplified introduction, various participants declared, “I want my pit bull…
For all the talk about the elevation and hill climbs that litter the USA Pro Cycling Challenge, the race began with cyclists shooting out of the start like a gun and downhill from the Garden of the Gods into downtown Colorado Springs. When the speedy time trial was done, German…
Residents of Garfield, Rio Blanco and Weld counties already know the drill, so to speak — the march of natural gas rigs across their landscape. Activists are gearing up to fight a surge in well permits in South Park. And now the Four Corners area is bracing for a possible…

A Fort Collins medical marijuana clinic was open as usual Monday despite being a crime scene the day before. As Michael Roberts reported yesterday in his post about a possible Fort Collins dispensary ban, Herbal Wellness LLC was robbed at gunpoint on Sunday. I spoke earlier with an Herbal Wellness…
“I’m a map guy,” says Brian Timoney of The Timoney Group. So when he saw the gusher of data from the 2010 census, he couldn’t resist putting together a color-coded map showing the racial and ethnic changes that have taken place from Pueblo to Fort Collins over the past decade…
A few of this year’s back-to-school supplies are hot collectibles… No-Poop-Fairies #2 Pencil and Sharpener: Jefferson County’s thicker-diameter pencils keep tiny hands from cramping, so student’s can continue to pick up pest waste during after-school dog walks. The dog-shaped sharpener, illustrated above, also promotes proper pick up and disposal of…
Jason Beinor is a legal medical marijuana patient. But that didn’t prevent his firing as a street sweeper on the 16th Street Mall after registering a positive in a random blood test — and neither did it convince the Colorado Court of Appeals that he deserved unemployment benefits following his…
In our recent post about bike-rage attacks in advance of the Deer Creek Challenge and (possibly) the USA Pro Cycling Challenge, a Jeffco spokeswoman emphasized that cyclists have caused problems, too. One pedaller believes that’s true, and illustrates his point via an incident that made him understand resentment against two-wheelers…

Update: The bank-robbing, car-chase-leading Dougherty gang has not yet been charged with a pair of carjackings in Utah prior to their capture earlier this month. Quiznos, the Denver-based sub-sandwich chain, may no longer be the name sponsor of the USA Pro Cycling Challenge, but the company’s original store (oh, the memories!) is still playing a part in the race. The cyclists blasted away from the starting line in Colorado Springs on August 22 on their…
“Go as hard as you possibly can for two minutes! Go! Go! Go!” The spin-class instructor hollers instructions to the two dozen sweating bodies hunched over stationary bikes in a darkened room in the Flatiron Athletic Club. The darkness helps the industrial-strength floor fans keep the space slightly below sweltering,…
