The Denver based WAIT (“Why Am I Tempted?”) abstinence-until-marriage program has used over $8.2 million in federal funds to bring assemblies like ones illustrated in the clips below to public schools, churches and community centers throughout the state. The abstinence program, demonstrated by Shelly Donahue, is the subject of this…
Here at the Extreme Sports Desk, we’re big fans of work by Sweetgrass Productions, a cabal of Colorado College grads turned gonzo ski-and-snowboard documentary filmmakers. And now their most ambitious effort to date, a two-year epic journey to “landscapes never before visited on film” across South America, is headed for…
Denver blog posts bring the heat. Colorado Independent’s John Tomasic notes a new poll that shows Colorado voters are lukewarm on Barack Obama — but outright cool toward Romney, Bachmann, Perry and Palin. Free Colorado’s Ari Armstrong: Is an “ethics advocate” really a “shrill partisan hack”? Unseen Denver features some…
Get out your earplugs! All summer long, Elitch Gardens has been ending every night with a fireworks show — although the amusement park modified the display, muting the “high-percussive” explosions when some neighbors complained about the noise. But tonight, as part of a competition, the park will offer a real…
Organized by the Discovery Series committee of the Urban Land Institute’s Young Leaders Group, today’s Highland walking tour will feature the architects, developers and builders who are causing the strange changes in an older neighborhood being replaced by the new…..
In August 2010, the members of the Department of Revenue’s medical marijuana working group were announced with some hoopla. But what a difference a year makes. Twirling Hippy confections’ Jessica LeRoux, one of the 25 original members, would like to continue working with the group, but she can’t get answers…
Yesterday’s post about the top 10 things you shouldn’t call the cops to help you find — prompted by a Greeley woman who told police her misplaced TV remote had been stolen — didn’t strike some readers as a laugh riot. Indeed, one saw it and other recent attempts at…
Update below: Timothy English was arrested on suspicion of assault in an incident that smacks of class warfare. He allegedly asked a man for change, and after being rejected, he reached into his guitar case and pulled out not an ax, but a club, which he used to hit his…
At first glance, no one should give a single damn about a Denver Broncos-Dallas Cowboys preseason game given the teams’ miserable seasons a year ago. But because of the quarterback drama in Denver between alleged trade-bait Kyle Orton and anointed one Tim Tebow, as well as the ‘Boys high-profile comeback…
Yesterday morning’s arrest of the Dougherty gang was just as wild as the crime spree that precipitated the trio’s cross-country sprint. It involved a car chase, a flipped car and the shooting of Lee Grace Dougherty, the proud redneck and ex-stripper whose skanky bikini photos have become Internet sensations…
Is Boulder less liberal than Denver when it comes to medical marijuana licensing? Although MMJ business rejection rates suggest the answer is “yes,” Boulder officials haven’t done an analysis. However, the City of Boulder provided us with the background check form it uses in licensing, and it’s pretty tough stuff,…
Marijuana activist Corey Donahue is the target of a theft and disturbing the peace warrant. The reason: Last month, he allegedly took documents from the Medical Marijuana Enforcement Division without paying for them…
A Denver-based “energy shot with eight superfruits,” Bazi has gone the way of the 7-Eleven. The beverage was once sold only through a multi-level marketing network — a scheme Westword explored in the 2009 cover story, “The Wizard of Bazi.” But now, Bazi has ditched that model for the tried-and-true…

This morning’s capture in Southern Colorado of the Dougherty gang — sister and brother Lee Grace and Ryan, plus their half-brother Dylan Dougherty Stanley — would have made big news anyhow, given the trio’s alleged recent crime spree and cross-country sprint. But Lee’s past as a stripper, not to mention…
As reported by our Toke of the Town blog, the Department of Justice’s response to a lawsuit by Arizona Governor Jan Brewer directly contradicted an assertion by Colorado Attorney General John Suthers that state employees might be prosecuted for enforcing state medical marijuana laws. Attorney Brian Vicente sees that as…
Representative Doug Lamborn capitalizes on a remarkable skill for creating sticky situations by introducing his new Tar Baby race paste. Developed by crafty congressmen for budget-burdened back-to-school students, Lamborn’s Tar Baby race paste sticks faster, and longer, than the leading white power adhesives…..
The Greeley Police Department recently shared this report from late last month: “Police responded to the 2100 block of 35th Avenue Court after a woman complained that someone stole the remote control for her television cable box. The officer helped the woman find her remote.” That was nice of him…
Update: Well, that was fast. Authorities have just revealed that all three members of the so-called Dougherty gang were captured south of Pueblo. Last week’s list of the top ten Colorado sports stars who pissed us off by leaving, either by their choice or ownership’s, covered a lot of bases, as well as football and basketball sidelines and hockey benches. But one reader makes a compelling argument for us having missed a loss…

And they’ve also revealed a new bit of information that somehow makes this unimaginably horrific incident even worse: Before David killed his child,…
Boulder’s got a reputation for being very medical-pot-friendly — but as Patricia Calhoun reported, Denver has been more liberal about licensing MMJ businesses. Why? Boulder spokesman Patrick von Keyserling says his community hasn’t compared its rules to those used in Denver. But the majority of unapproved Boulder dispensaries are appealing…
