Parks rangers with Boulder County have shut down an illegal mountain bike trail built down a steep face on the north side of Flagstaff Mountain, after someone now identified as professional mountain biker Mike West was cited for using it. Luckily, extreme mountain bikers will soon have a new spot…
In 2004, Peter Spitz was shot in the face several times by his wife, Teresa — who then killed his mother. Blinded in the assault, Spitz defended Teresa when her case went to trial, and she was eventually found not guilty by reason of insanity and sent to the Colorado…
It’s always fascinating to see what comes out of our Best of Denver Readers’ Poll — especially the silly, snarky answers we get to some of our questions. We learned that jokes about your mom are still (apparently) funny, that many of you watch Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy…
Denver blog posts are multiplying like rabbits… with calculators. Colorado Pols’ NCAA-style bracket to determine the state’s political powerhouse for the year is down to its final two contestants — John Hickenlooper and Ken Salazar. Vote early and often. Square State’s Bill Egnor offers: “When What You Study Makes You…
You’ve heard them — the rumors that the Denver Broncos will use the second overall pick in the upcoming NFL draft on a quarterback. Yahoo! Sports contributor Bill Snyder’s heard them, too, and he thinks Broncos fans in general, and Tim Tebow lovers in particular, would be very displeased if…
More than 475 winners are included in Westword’s bulky Best of Denver 2011 issue, which you can view live on our site right now at the Best of Denver homepage. Hopefully between this, the NCAA tournament and the Rockies game on Friday, you’ve killed a good chunk of your productivity…
Update below: The latest bizarre twist in Birther Nation’s assault on President Barack Obama has a special home-state flavor. Colorado Springs-based retired Colonel Greg Hollister claims to have surreptitiously accessed Obama’s selective-service records, which call into question if he was born in Hawaii, as he insists. But do they instead…
Update below: In 2009, AM 760 host Jay Marvin suffered a health crisis involving a potentially lethal infection and epic back surgery that laid him up for the better part of a year. As a result, David Sirota took over Marvin’s slot that December, with Jay formally retiring from radio…
Update: Mere minutes after publishing a post about what was described as a fatal auto/pedestrian accident on South Buckley near East Kentucky, we received new information from the Aurora Police Department making it clear that the previous theory was incorrect. Turns out Faison Eriven, nineteen, who was originally thought to…
Update: Last night, the city council voted 10-0 to approve amendments to the city’s 1997 needle-exchange ordinance. The decision thrilled Lisa Raville, director of Denver’s Harm Reduction Action Center, whose mission is to empower and advocate for injection drug users…
Duane Chapman, aka Dog the Bounty Hunter, is something of a hometown hero — and also a genuine comment magnet, with posts regularly popping up on new posts and old. Here’s a defense of the Dog, from a preview of his E! True Hollywood Story published last May…
Despite the firing of officers involved in the Michael DeHerrera beating, the Denver Police Department continues to be a criticism target. The latest example: an American Civil Liberties Union lawsuit (read it below) filed on behalf of Jose Sanchez. Among other things, it alleges DPD biased policing and racial profiling…
At Giants slugger Barry Bonds’ perjury trial yesterday, the Colorado Rockies’ Jason Giambi testified about a long history of steroid use and his interactions with Bonds’ trainer, Greg Anderson. And outside? As seen in the video below, he signed autographs. Yes, the scene smacked of irony. But it also demonstrated…
There was so much positive about the CU Buffs’ mens basketball squad this year that it was tough to watch the season flicker out as a result of three bad sequences in a row during crunch time of last night’s 62-61 NIT semi-final loss against Alabama. So let’s deal with…
In the ongoing bureaucratic battle over medical marijuana, Castle Rock has already witnessed its fair share of skirmishes. Amber Ostrom, owner of the city’s one and only dispensary, Plants 4 Life, had to jump through numerous legal hoops before she was allowed to keep operating. And now, on April 5,…
MTV Cribs is a guilty pleasure for a lot of people, but spoofs of the show — which typically features the rockin’ homes of mega-pimpin’ athletes, movie stars and rappers — can be even funnier. A couple of weeks, ago, The Daily Show did its Cribs: Teachers Edition, an offshoot…
These Denver blog posts materialized before our very eyes. Denver Stiffs’ Andrew Feinstein shares what we’ve learned since the Nuggets dealt Carmelo Anthony to the Knicks — including that Melo is a high-maintenance superstar. To say nothing of LaLa. WhoSaidYouSaid spotlights a mom who really doesn’t like vouchers. Colorado Independent’s…
Only a few months ago, many University of Colorado fans were touting Dave Logan as the CU Buffs’ next head coach. But it was not to be: CU’s hiring of Jon Embree made it clear that Logan is unlikely to ever jump from coaching Mullen High School to his Division…
We’ve made lotsa sport of Niwot-based Crocs, from a 2005 feature that included savage reviews by fashionistas to reports of what Alan Prendergast described as the “brightly hued, comfy-ugly clown shoes” being escalator unfriendly. So our first thought after hearing the company is donating 100,000 pairs to earthquake and tsunami…
Update: On Friday, Robert Montoya was convicted of two sex assault counts revolving around his relationship with Kayleah Wilson, who was then twelve-years-old. Of course, Wilson was found murdered last year, and Montoya was declared as a person of interest in the investigation — and a spokesman for the Greeley…
Although Representative Claire Levy has gotten plenty of attention for her sponsorship of THC driving limits, and her change of heart over the best possible standard, she’s equally passionate about the Colorado Juvenile Equal Protection Act, which is slated to go before the judiciary committee today. It, too, could stir…
In a post yesterday, we praised Michael Hancock’s new campaign ad in comparison with those released to date by rivals such as Chris Romer, Carol Boigon and James Mejia. But at least one reader wasn’t buying what any of these candidates is selling…
