Pop quiz for all the oenophiles out there: What’s the difference between a shiraz and a syrah?

If you couldn’t answer off the top of your head, then perhaps it’s time for a refresher course (for a good cause) at Z Cuisine, 2239 West 30th Avenue, which will host a Wine Genealogy Benefit for Haiti from 5 to 7 p.m. tonight.

There will be appetizers, desserts and at least ten different shiraz/syrah vintages to taste (and for what it’s worth, “shiraz” and “syrah” refer to the same grape; they just call it syrah in France and shiraz in Australia and South Africa). You’ll taste wines from everywhere from the Rhone Valley (pictured) to California, all for just $25 — and the proceeds support Haitian relief efforts. For information or reservations (highly encouraged), call 303-477-1111.
