Denver is lucky to have two food-oriented nonprofits that help impoverished women get back on their feet: Work Options for Women and the Women’s Bean Project. While WOW trains women for careers in the restaurant industry (it runs Cafe Options), since it started in 1989, the Women’s Bean Project has relied on raising funds for needy women with gourmet-food production, starting with bean soup mixes and moving on to cookie and brownie mixes and spice rubs.
Last year, though, the Bean Project branched out by adding handmade jewelry to its line, creating employment for a dozen women in the process.
From 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. tonight, the Women’s Bean Project will host a launch party for its jewelry line at its office, 3201 Curtis Street. Prices for the pieces range from $20 to $59 — just a handful of beans for handmade jewelry.
