The construction of this EP is probably the best way to enter it. Clay and Barry are brothers; Clay writes the lyrics, and Barry writes the songs and sings. There are folk songs hung on varying degrees of static, and they sound like they were recorded inside a giant barrel. It’s important to note that the lyrics come first and stay first; many of the songs are two-chord affairs with melodies designed as vessels. The words themselves are a somewhat mixed bag — occasionally, it seems as though Clay’s vision didn’t make its way out of Barry’s mouth. The indie-rock folklore is mined heavily in the lyrics and less heavily in the music. The results are interesting but rarely pretty through most of the thirty-minute run time.
