Boldtype

Admittedly, not much has changed about Boldtype’s music since the band formed in 2002. It’s still pop-punk in its purest form, borrowing heavily from influences like Millencolin and Good Riddance while not really splicing in other genres. Luckily, Boldtype has gotten very, very good at this style. The group’s latest effort, Uneasy Days, showcases the maturity of the players, who’ve harnessed a dexterity that was not around at Boldtype’s inception. The EP’s opener, “Make Our Graves,” starts with a staccato, almost Judas Priest-like riff, while “Raise the Dead” uses false harmonics to create an eerie and foreboding tone without losing the speed and proficiency for which the band is known. Mike Waterhouse’s strong vocals are enhanced nicely by the rest of the band’s backing harmonies. Boldtype is not reinventing the wheel here, but it’s certainly greasing it up so the machine will run smoother and, hopefully, long into the future.
