Sic Alps

It’s probably a safe bet that Mike Donovan never met Gram Parsons — or Arthur Lee or Donovan Leitch, for that matter. He may not even be inspired by their music. But Sic Alps has plenty of garage psych stirred into its songwriting cauldron, and the act’s latest album, Glyphs, has a haunted, late-’60s Laurel Canyon haze and unexpected intensity that makes you think of “Hurdy Gurdy Man,” Grievous Angel and Forever Changes. Donovan is apparently no stranger to contemplating deep reaches of the mind that most people prefer to cover over. Seeing Sic Alps live is like looking through a window into another time or place, where being a cult band isn’t some cynical marketing ploy.
