There is something otherworldly and old-worldly about the songs on the Seven Hats’ Scientific American; they’d be right at home on a Guy Maddin soundtrack. Julie Davis’s voice, while in the foreground, sounds like it was captured on film and then played until the film stock was worn to the point of crackling. The sound design on “It’s All Right With Me” gives the song the feel of a jazz-lounge torch number, with a haunted yet warmly incandescent quality to the instrumentation. Elsewhere, “The Wonder of You” evokes the kind of dreamlike blurring of recent historical eras that David Lynch employed in Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive. What is striking overall is the richness of tone executed by Davis and Joseph Pope III, whether through the former’s vocals or the pair’s masterful use of vintage equipment.
