The twenty tracks on the Bocumast Instances Vol. 1 compilation cover an incredible amount of territory, from several varieties of relatively straightforward guitar rock and singer-songwriter material to outré experimental electronics. That kind of willful eclecticism can be crippling, but it works here for the simple reason that the label has managed to collect some truly extraordinary talent. Sure, the narcotic bliss of Dormir’s “Smoke” might sound a little weird on the same disc as the almost drill-and-bass sound of Yawn Tron’s “Grid Snap.” Hearing them both next to the post-punk meets ’70s jazz funk of Natural Selection’s “Taste Her Spells” is even stranger. But with such high quality, who cares? This comp announces Bocumast as the most exciting record label in Denver.
