Although the Westminster Police recently staged a drug enforcement checkpoint, most under-the-influence crashes still tend to involve alcohol. The arrest of Department of Corrections officer Jason Ulrich is a case in point: He tested at more than triple the standard for drunkenness following a crash into a car occupied by the Price family that left one member fighting for his life.

The incident reportedly took place at about 9:05 a.m. this past Saturday on East Smoky Hill Road. Ulrich, 38, is said to have been traveling at 75 miles per hour in a 45 MPH zone when he smashed into a Honda Pilot occupied by Jonathan and Diane Price and their two-year-old daughter.

Fortunately, Diane and her little girl sustained only minor injuries. But Jonathan wasn’t so fortunate. His laundry list of injuries include a lacerated kidney and spleen, four broken ribs and a broken femur. As late as yesterday, he was still in serious condition at a local hospital.

According to the Aurora Police Department, Ulrich registered a .252 blood alcohol content following the collision — in excess of three times the .08 legal limit. The APD is also testing for drugs in his system, but those results aren’t back yet.
