The study of neighbors through their porch decorations…

During repeated investigation, the yard arteologist quickly spots variations on themes in yard artistry. A wintertime favorite in the more nostalgia-accessible neighborhoods is the porch sled. It is probably safe to say that any yard artist who finds sweet sentiment in these torture devices never spent a snowy afternoon trying to ride on one.

The biggest surprise is that porch sleds are so popular. This must have been a recently featured design idea in a magazine that goes by the name of Country Home or Loving Hands. Perhaps porch decorators are gearing up for the upcoming 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games. There is no need to fear that a porch sled will get stolen, either. Just touching an old sled guarantees a few splinters and runner cuts.
