Twenty years ago today, on October 12, 1997, John Denver died when an experimental aircraft he was flying crashed into Monterey Bay off the coast of California. But even before this benchmark anniversary, the makings of a full-scale JD revival was underway, as exemplified by the prominent role his song "Take Me Home, Country Roads" plays in two major films currently unspooling at a multiplex near you. And speaking as a longtime resident of the city for which the man born Henry John Deutschendorf Jr. renamed himself, I find that irritating as fuck.

Back in 2013, we told you about Boobies Rock!, which sent hot girls into bars to sell merchandise emblazoned with the company's name that supposedly raised money to fight cancer — although many if not most of the proceeds allegedly went into the pocket of the organization's founder, Adam Shryock. Friday, September 22, was a rough day for Denver Public Schools. First, a number of East High School students joined assorted parents at a protest prompted by the de facto ouster of principal Andy Mendelsberg and assistant principal/athletic director Lisa Porter in regard to their handling of videos showing cheer team members being forced into splits. Then, that evening, claims about a Confederate flag at a football game between the Weld Central High School Rebels and the Manual High School Thunderbolts resulted in charges of racism and alleged in-game injuries to three Manual players that may have been related to bad blood stirred by the controversy.
The Cannabist, the Denver Post's marijuana site, is the latest victim of downsizing at the the newspaper. According a tweet by Jake Browne, who reviewed marijuana for the section and hosted its signature video program, The Cannabist Show, the Post "has cut all editorial staff and will replace them with bots."

The Denver General Defense Committee, a progressive group affiliated with the Industrial Workers of the World, also known as the Wobblies, has published a fiery account of the clash between members of a white supremacist group and Antifa protesters outside a controversial event on the Colorado State University campus earlier this month. In it, the authors explicitly state that members of the CSU Police Department stood "on the side of the neo-Nazis and fascists" during the confrontation and argue that a video shared here provides evidence to that effect by way of an officer telling a protester afterward, "If you guys need something, let us know."
